Fender Flare 101
A fender flare attaches to the fender (body panel around the tire) of a
vehicle and extends out to prevent rock chips, add tire coverage, and to
enhance the appearance of the vehicle. Most are made of plastic but they
could also be fiberglass or metal. They usually come in a smooth matte
(semi gloss) black finish that can installed as is or easily be painted to match your vehicle.
There are several brands of fender flare manufactures that offer vehicle
specific kits designed to bolt on without any major cutting or
modification required. Your choices for aftermarket premolded fender flares
are EGR, Stampede, Xenon, Warn, or our favorite Bushwacker.
Bushwacker is the most recognized name in fender flares because they offer a
huge selection of flares to fit almost every truck or SUV from 1966 to
current. We have been selling this line for over 12 years and can only
think of two kits that had to be returned as defective (that is very rare in
the automotive industry). We can say without a doubt that no one
builds a better flare, offers kits for as many applications, or has as many
styles to pick from. If the goal is to make your vehicle stand out ordering
a set of Bushwacker fender flares is most definitely step # 1.
Bushwacker now offers 5 styles of fender flares that are available for most
trucks and SUV’s
-
Street Flares:
The smallest of all the Bushwacker styles at only about .75 inches wide
is designed to go on trucks and SUV’s that will be running stock width
tires. They usually cover a little over two inches of the fender and
will definitely change the whole look of your vehicle.
-
OE Style:
OE stands for original equipment meaning that these flares will look
very similar to the factory installed flares that came on vehicles like
yours. These flares cover more of the fender and are slightly wider than
the Street Flares. They work great with stock size or slightly wider
tires.
-
Extend-A-Fenders:
These flares are usually over an inch wider than the other two styles
and covers more of the fender. They are designed to work with oversized tires (10.5” or wider).
-
Pocket Style:
These are very aggressive looking flares that are even wider than the
Extend-A-Fenders and have pockets all around the outer edge with a
stainless steel bolt on the inside of each pocket. These will look great
on stock or lifted truck with 11.5” or wider tires.
-
Cut Out:
These flares are specifically designed to go on lifted trucks with big
tires that demand extra fender clearance. These are as the name says
cut out flares meaning that you will cut out a chunk of your fender to
install this flare giving you more tire clearance. They are the widest of all the Bushwacker
fender flare kits.
